IOM Iraq contributes to configure the data collection system of the Ministry of Migration and Displacement
Following the recommendation of His Excellency Dr. Jasim Mohammed Al-Jaff, MoMD Minister, and several high-level consultations with MoMD Directors on the importance of a sound data collection and management system, IOM Iraq’s EU-funded HIJRA AMINA programme has embarked on the development of a tailored information management system for the MoMD. The aim is to support the Ministry in data management, which will enable enhanced service delivery to the beneficiaries of the MoMD, a much needed improvement especially in the context of the protracted migration crisis.
A group of MoMD IT specialists as well as generalists involved in the process of registering and assisting IDPs gathered between 31 August and 2 September in Erbil to examine the features of this tailored system, under the guidance of an IOM expert in database development. The workshop fostered in-depth discussions on the type of data needed, the use of data and the current mechanism – its strengths and gaps.
Participants commended IOM Iraq’s initiative to organize the workshop, as it provided the opportunity to share perspectives, ideas and suggestions and to develop and enhance the existing database to meet the current challenges in terms of the mass flows of IDPs which impacted on the resources available to ensure timely registration and service delivery.
The added value of IOM’s expert was his experience of databases developed in similar migration crisis contexts. The three-day exchange allowed mapping a set of concrete collective recommendations that will contribute to developing an integrated system that incorporates the different types of beneficiaries in one database.
