Basrah Governorate Profile - April 2014

Basrah is Iraq’s southernmost governorate, bordering Kuwait and Iran and located on the Persian Gulf.  The governorate also contains a large portion of Iraq’s oil reserves. A small number of IDP families from Anbar have arrived to Basrah since January and the governorate hosts relatively large numbers of returnee families from Syria and other countries abroad.

The security situation in Basrah seems to have improved overall since 2013, although there are still occasional incidents such as assassinations. There have been reports of Sunnis in the governorate being targeted. Sectarian and tribal tensions have increased, particularly in the run-up to the April 30th parliamentary elections.
