Kirkuk Governorate Profile - April 2014

Kirkuk is an ethnically diverse governorate in northern Iraq containing primarily Arabs, Kurds, and Turkmens. Kirkuk hosts a large population of displaced families from Anbar and Salah al-Din governorates, and there has also been displacement within the governorate itself. It is currently facing a deteriorating security situation, the ongoing dispute of its governance between the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Government of Iraq, a growing Syrian refugee population, as well as an increasing number of Iraqi returnees from Syria.
