Salah Al-Din Governorate Profile - January 2015
Salah al-Din governorate, located in north-central Iraq and home to one of Iraq’s largest oil refineries, has been the site of ongoing armed conflict since spring. Before June, Salah al-Din was a destination for IDPs fleeing violence in Anbar governorate. When this violence spread to Salah al-Din in June after the armed group (AG) takeover of Mosul and Tikrit, families began displacing from Salah al-Din en masse. This displacement has continued until today, with the majority of IDP families having fled north into Kirkuk, Erbil and Sulaymaniyah. However, a significant number of individuals displaced within the governorate; as of 25 December, there were 53,610 individual IDPs located in Salah al-Din.
